Dear colleague,

I wish to introduce you the International Human Science Research Conference (IHSRC) 2007 that will be held in Italy for the very first time. The international Human Science Research Conference is a distinguished international network in human science research, with a long and well-established cultural tradition in researching human experience within a qualitative approach. Starting from a clear phenomenological choice, during the years the group has been opening also to other qualitative research approaches. Since 1982 the conference has been holding yearly every other year in North America, Europe, Asia or South Africa.

IHSRC 2007 will take place in Rovereto, hosted by the Faculty of Cognitive Science and the Department of Cognitive Science and Education of the University of Trento. The conference, peer-reviewed, will be organized in parallels sessions for presenting papers and symposia. Keynote speakers will address the conference theme. In the two decades of the last century, the post-modern climate and mood represented undoubtedly a fundamental and necessary fracture with the positivistic optimism, and it marked the crisis of the calculating, omniscient, omnipotent reason.

The rich semantic ambiguity of this notion invites us to assume it in its complexity and, at the same time, requires today to be frankly questioned. That is why some extreme consequences of the post-modern turn in human sciences have also entailed a mistrust in the same possibility of any scientific knowledge, giving rise sometimes to skepticism, pessimism as well as scientific nihilism. Among the opportunities to overcome this impasse between the post-modern subjectivism and the re-emerging temptations coming from an hard objectivistic paradigm, based on natural sciences, phenomenology seems to represent a
stimulating third way, worth to be explored and discussed. The 2007 conference will focus on discussing, theoretically, methodologically and empirically, what is happening around and after the post-modern discourse and the implications of this debate in human science research. The challenge of IHSRC 2007 will be to explore collectively the possible horizons for the research in human science today and if  phenomenology can be considered an up-to-date approach to deal with these challenges.

Format of presentations

Two formats of abstract will be accepted:
- Papers: a paper is submitted by one person, but also with co-authors.
Individual presentations are ordinary given 40 minutes, with the understanding that 10 minutes be given for questions and discussions
- Symposium: a symposium consists of at least three linked papers within a common outline.  A symposium normally lasts 100 minutes, including question time

Each abstract should not exceed 1500 characters for papers and 2000 for symposium (including common overview and single papers).

Caro collega,

Vorrei presentarle la International Human Science Research Conference (IHSRC) 2007 che avrà luogo nel 2007 per la prima volta in assoluto in Italia. La IHSRC è un prestigioso network internazionale di studiosi di varia estrazione, ma sempre nell’ambito della ricerca nelle scienze umane, che ha una lunga e consolidata tradizione culturale (nasce nel 1986) di ricerca dell’esperienza umana secondo un approccio qualitativo che, partendo da una decisa opzione fenomenologica, nel corso degli anni si è andato progressivamente aprendo anche a diversi orientamenti di ricerca. La conferenza che si svolge annualmente ad anni alterni in nord America e in Europa (o Asia). La conferenza 2007 si terrà a Rovereto, ospitata dalla neonata facoltà di Scienze Cognitive e dal Dipartimento di Scienze della Cognizione e della Formazione, nei giorni 13-16 giugno 2007. La conferenza, peer reviewed, sarà organizzata per sessioni parallele con presentazione di paper, symposia, e momenti in plenaria con keynote speakers.

Nell’ultimo ventennio del secolo scorso il postmodernismo ha rappresentato indubbiamente una fondamentale e necessaria rottura con l’ottimismo positivista, minando opportunamente la fiducia nell’oggettivismo e segnando la crisi della ragione calcolante, onnisciente, onnipotente. Il fatto che sia difficile se non impossibile definire cosa si intenda propriamente con postmodernismo ci invita a assumerlo in tutta la sua ambiguità semantica e a porto al centro di una discussione e di un confronto. Tuttavia l’estremizzazione della visione postmodernista nelle scienze sociali ha portato con sé anche una sfiducia nella possibilità stessa della conoscenza scientifica, ha finito per minare le basi stesse delle scienze umane, inducendo a scetticismo, quando non addirittura a un profondo nichilismo scientifico. In questo senso, la svolta del secolo ci impone di ripensare agli orizzonti possibili della ricerca empirica a ritrovare delle basi per una conoscenza rigorosa del mondo che non ignori le legittime critiche del pensiero postmoderno, ermeneutica, post-strutturalista, ma che non ne rimanga imbrigliata nelle maglie critiche. Fra le possibilità di superamento di questo impasse la fenomenologia sembra rappresentare una stimolante terza via fra un soggettivismo postmoderno nella ricerca in scienze umane, e le tentazioni di un paradigma forte naturalistico, oggettivista, scientista (sul modello delle scienze naturali).
